The biggest enemy of outdoor bonsai is wind, as strong winds can quickly dehydrate delicate buds and leaves, so a sheltered position is preferable. Although most bonsai tolerate various weather conditions, the ideal setting is a sheltered, semi-shaded spot to prevent your bonsai from drying out too quickly.

Watering is the most crucial part of growing bonsai. Check your bonsai morning and evening to see if it needs watering. If the soil looks dark and feels wet, it does not require watering. Only when the soil looks light brown and feels damp should you water your bonsai. Water thoroughly until the water drains through the holes at the bottom of the pot. Never let your bonsai dry out, and avoid keeping it constantly wet; the soil should transition from wet to damp between waterings. Remember, the hotter the location, the more water your bonsai will need. If the soil surface hardens during hot weather, submerge your bonsai in water, covering the soil surface, for about ten minutes.

Oaks, which are deciduous bonsai, should be pruned to shape rather than wired, as wiring can damage their delicate bark. Prune new shoots that have grown to about 2-3 cm using sharp bonsai scissors, cutting back to the first pair of new leaves. To keep your bonsai strong and healthy, we recommend using a good bonsai fertilizer weekly during spring, summer, and early autumn.
