The Fascinating World of Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms, or sakura in Japanese, have a rich cultural significance. The flowers are categorised based on their petal count:

• Hitoe: Flowers with five petals or fewer
• Hanyae: Flowers with five to ten petals
• Yae: Flowers with more than ten petals

“One of the best Cherry Blossom varieties for Bonsai is Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’,” Sarah notes. “It’s compact, with beautiful zigzag branches that create an interesting structure even when not in bloom. When it does flower, it’s a spectacular sight with its profusion of pale pink to white blossoms.”

Cherry Blossom trees have some fascinating facts associated with them:

1. The oldest cherry blossom tree in Japan, called Jindai Zakura, has a root circumference of 13.5 meters!
2. “In Japanese, ‘ko’ translates to ‘child,’ which adds a charming dimension to one of our favorite cherry blossom bonsai varieties,” Sarah explains. “Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai‘ is a standout choice for bonsai enthusiasts. Its name poetically means ‘dance of the little girl,’ perfectly capturing the delicate, graceful nature of this tree.”
3. These trees do produce cherries, but they’re not for human consumption. “The small, sour cherries are a favourite snack for birds in the summer,” Sarah explains.
4. Climate change is affecting bloom times. “We’re seeing cherry blossoms peak earlier each year,” Sarah notes. “In 2021, Kyoto saw its earliest peak in over 1,200 years of records.”
5. “Here’s a delightful surprise for many,” Sarah adds, “cherry blossom petals are edible! They’re used in Japanese teas and sweets, offering a subtle, sometimes sweet, sometimes sour flavour reminiscent of cherries.”
