Ficus bonsai (Ficus retusa) is a member of the fig family and is the easiest of all indoor bonsai varieties. It is often known as the Banyan Bonsai Tree. It’s perfect for beginners and homes with lower light levels. It has wonderful deep green glossy leaves forming a stunning canopy and beauitul little fruits during summer months. It is not a fussy bonsai when it comes to positioning. Consequently, it is highly recommended with beautiful attributes.

Additionally, the Ficus buds back very quickly after pruning and has an immense amount of character in the trunk and aerial root system. A fun and powerful bonsai tree. Therefore, it’s a highly recommended indoor bonsai plant. Especially suitable if your house does not have much natural daylight. The bark exhibits beautiful silver striations. This bonsai species is always a favourite and would make a wonderful bonsai in your home or office. A perfect recommendation for a corporate foyer.

The Fig symbolises fertility and love. The Bible indicates that the Fig tree has spiritual meaning. The tree signifies health both spiritually and physically.

As Holly Noall took her first steps, she was already tending to miniature trees, pruning, shaping, and nurturing them. Her passion for bonsai cultivation ignited early, her natural talent evident even in childhood. This enthusiasm blossomed into a lifelong interest, marking the beginning of her journey with bonsai.

“The Ficus retusa is a very well-known bonsai species throughout the globe. It goes by many different names including the Ficus, the Chinese Banyan and the Indian Laurel Fig.” There are a very wide range of species within the Ficus (Fig) genus, others you may have heard of are the Ficus Ginseng and the Ficus Benjamina.

“They are actually a fruiting species; you typically find their fruits in late summer / early autumn. They are an evergreen species therefore they will display their distinctive leaves all year round.” Being that these bonsai are from the Fig family, it is no surprise that they fruit as they are related to the Mulberry and Jackfruit.

The Ficus is a species we tend to recommend for beginners.“ These bonsai have a low light tolerance, meaning that they can survive in darker locations than a lot of bonsai can. They also require less water than some bonsai. ”They are a great addition to apartments or old cottages where you may not be able to have other houseplants.”

“You will see a variety of difference in price throughout our Ficus bonsai. To allow everyone the opportunity to own a bonsai, we start off with younger, less trained bonsai, working up to older, more established bonsai which have received years of intense work.” Our generic range come potted in what Holly calls “standard” ceramic blue pots, these are handmade and do sometimes contain small blemishes that do not affect the pots’ integrity. Our Premium range Ficus come potted in very high-quality ceramic pots, supplied with matching drip trays.

“These are a strong, well rooted species which deserve the popularity that they have received. Personally, I love the silver striations and aerial roots.” Holly and her team have carefully grown these bonsai, inputting endless hours of pruning, watering, styling amongst lots of other aspects of care to ensure they are healthy and robust.

“Did you know that one of the oldest recorded bonsai in the world is a Ficus Retusa? It is over 1000 years old, and you can find it in the Crespi Museum in Italy.” It is a magnificent looking tree!

Bonsai expert Holly literally grew up with a pair of bonsai scissors in her hand. As Lloyd’s eldest daughter, Holly has benefitted from growing up on the nursery. Despite being in her early twenties, Holly already has many years of bonsai experience under her belt.
