The Zanthozylum piperitum, also known as the aromatic pepper bonsai tree, is an evergreen indoor bonsai tree species celebrated for its unique qualities and versatility. Renowned bonsai master Lloyd Noall, owner of Bonsai Direct with nearly 40 years of experience, shares his expert insights on this exceptional bonsai.

“This overlooked bonsai variety is slowly gaining popularity,” Lloyd notes. It is a tropical species, making it ideal for indoor cultivation year-round. “One of its most delightful features is its sweet peppery or citrusy fragrance when pruned. The scent is fresh and cleansing”.

Higher regarded for its wide range of attributes, the aromatic pepper bonsai tree showcases small clusters of tiny white flowers, which are particularly striking against its vibrant green foliage. “The foliage is absolutely beautiful and delicately scented,” Lloyd says. “The bark develops a rough texture with age, taking on a warm buff colour that adds character and a sense of maturity to this elegant bonsai.” He adds, “This is a perfect, more unusual species, suitable for those who have never grown a bonsai.”

During summer, sprays of small, white-yellow-green flowers appear on the current season’s growth, followed by tiny red fruit that split open to reveal black seeds. These seeds, along with the young leaves, are used as garnishes in Oriental cooking, adding a unique flavour to various dishes.

In Japan, the tree is known as sanshō (山椒), and in Korea, it is called chopi (초피). Both the leaves and fruits (peppercorns) are widely used as aromatics and flavorings in these countries. The plant belongs to the citrus and rue family, Rutaceae.

“The leaves of this bonsai are naturally tiny & superbly proportioned. They are glossy deep green, arranged in an alternate pattern,” Lloyd explains. “The term ‘pinnate’ refers to leaves that have leaflets arranged on either side of a common axis. It’s a distinctive feature that adds to the tree’s aesthetic appeal.”

For optimal flowering, Lloyd advises, “Be careful not to prune off the flower buds. Allow a period from mid-May without pruning to encourage flowering.”
